ABOUT THE WM

The Worthwhile Mile is a project to promote health and adventure while raising awareness and funds to support worthy causes. It accomplishes this by organizing and publicizing service-oriented cycling events executed by both the WM and other local initiatives.

The WM's mission is to improve support and awareness through advocacy for patient populations and health topics that are less understood, under-researched and/or under-represented. With public health and equity at its core, the WM believes:

ACTIVE ADVENTURE + WORTHY CAUSES = IMPROVED AWARENESS, SERVICES & QUALITY OF LIFE

The Worthwhile Mile originated as a project to support the Walter Spohn Education Fund and improve public awareness about innovative research and services in the field of facial prosthetic rehabilitation, Anaplastology.

Throughout the spring and summer of 2012, Chicago-based anaplastologist, Erin Stevens, pledged to cycle 1000 miles to promote the practice of Clinical Anaplastology and inform the general public and health care professionals about its services and treatment options.  She had great success and vowed to carry the project forward by opening it up to multiple riders. There is more power in numbers, right?

This past summer, Erin served as one of four leaders, guiding a team of 28 cyclists from the Atlantic coast of North Carolina to the beaches of San Diego, California. Motivated to learn the ins and outs of organizing larger group rides, she gleaned a wealth of knowledge from her personal experiences and those of her Bike & Build directors and alumni leaders. While descending a range in the Rockies on the 4th of July, Erin made up her mind to move forward with an expansion of The Worthwhile Mile in 2014.

So here we are! The WM 2014 offers THREE rides this summer:
